That challenge was front and centre in the construction of the Nutrien Bulk Fertiliser Distribution Centre in Kwinana, a landmark project for WA’s agricultural supply chain.
Built by Auspan, the state-of-the-art facility forms part of an investment to increase fertiliser storage capacity by around 20 per cent, strengthening supply security for WA farmers and supporting an agricultural sector valued at $16 billion.
Designing for a Corrosive Reality
Fertiliser storage presents one of the most aggressive environments for construction materials. Airborne salts and chemical residues can significantly reduce the lifespan of traditional steel components if not properly protected.
To meet these conditions, Auspan adopted a design strategy focused on corrosion resistance throughout the structure, from protective coatings on structural steel to treated concrete surfaces and stainless steel fixings. But one of the most significant material decisions was replacing traditional steel with Wesbeam’s e-beam engineered LVL.
“Timber is naturally corrosion resistant,” says Al Black, Marketing Manager at Auspan. “In this environment, it will outperform a steel equivalent over the life of the building.”
Timber in a Commercial Shed
Timber-based products are still relatively rare in large-scale industrial sheds. However, the Nutrien project demonstrates how engineered timber can provide a practical and durable alternative when longevity matters most.

“The short turnaround time for the volume of timber required was impressive and a big factor in awarding the project to Wesbeam,” Black explains.
Flexibility in beam lengths (including 10.2 m, 10.8 m and 12.6 m) allowed Auspan to optimise layouts, reduce waste, and improve installation efficiency on site.
